Winter Fun

amaryllis-flower-3-copy
Lauren and Tatum were very excited today.  Their Amaryllis Flower finally bloomed!  We planted it three weeks ago and have been keeping an eye on it every day.  The plant grew about 1/2 inch every day so it has been fun for the twins to monitor its progress.  I think it was a surprise to them that the flower is so pretty.

Growing an amaryllis flower is a fun way for kids to learn math and science.  When I taught fifth grade, we would measure and graph the plant’s progress and talk about photosynthesis.  Since Lauren and Tatum aren’t too interested in photosynthesis at the moment, we measured the plants growth while practicing our numbers instead.  We used a ruler to mark inches on a poster board and measured the plant as it grew.  The plant grows so fast, it was fun for them to count the number of inches as the plant grew bigger and bigger.  These flowers are so easy to grow and you can pick them up at the grocery store or hardware store.  We got ours at Target, our favorite place to shop.  It’s from Smith & Hawken and comes with the cute planter for under $15.  The flower is seasonal, so if you want to grow one yourself you need to get started!

Blue Ridge Photography

blue-ridge-photography-copyLast week we visited the Top of the Line show in Visalia.  It was so much fun to see the variety of vendors selling crafts, gifts and artwork.  My favorite local artist, Virginia Wilson of Lindsay was there with her absolutely beautiful photography.  Shown above is my favorite of her collection.  Growing up in Lindsay, I have so many fun childhood memories of playing in orange groves.  This photograph hangs in my breakfast nook and often takes me back to those fun, sun filled days.

Virginia Wilson has an extensive collection of photography capturing California and Europe in unique and exciting ways.  You can check out her collection at BlueRidgePhoto.com.

Pilloroo is in Fig Garden Bookstore!

fig-garden-bookstore-copy Last week we had the pleasure of delivering our first order to Fig Garden Bookstore in Fresno.  This amazing store has a wonderful collection of adult and children books along with a great selection of unique toys and gifts.  The store has such a wide variety of hard to find gift ideas, it would be easy to spend an afternoon in sheer delight discovering all of the adorable goodies that are on display.

The staff is unbelievably friendly and extremely helpful.  They even have their own blog filled with book reviews and gift suggestions.

Nestled in the middle of Fresno’s own Fig Garden Village, the bookstore is surrounded by favorite stores like Pottery Barn and William Sonoma.  A wonderful destination for an afternoon of Christmas shopping, you can purchase all your gifts, have a great lunch at the Elbow Room and finish your day with an ice cream at Cold Stone Creamary.  Just make sure you remember to check out the Pilloroos at Fig Garden Bookstore!

We love being Fancy!

This summer we were introduced to the awesome Fancy Nancy books written by Jane O’Connor.  Always a teacher at heart; it thrills me to see a series of books that are fun to read and great for little girls!  The main character, Nancy, is an intelligent free spirit who loves to dress up in fancy clothes and use her very fancy vocabulary.  Our favorite book out of this series is “Fancy Nancy and the Posh Puppy“.  Nancy struggles being the “fanciest” person in her family as she searches for the perfect dog.

When Lauren and Tatum were invited to a dress up birthday party, I was thrilled to find Fancy Nancy dress up clothes.  So were they!  Dressed in their tutus, sunglasses, plastic high heels and boas, they were definitely the “fanciest” at the party!

Oh how I would love to create a Fancy Nancy Pilloroo!

We love Snugaboos!

With Halloween just around the corner, dressing up is more fun than ever.  These hooded blankets are perfect for little ones who love to feel like Super Heroes.  With five different characters, Snagaboos encourage kids to be good!  Snugaboos come with tatoo “Freckles” for kids to apply when they have been thoughtful or helpful.  Snugaboo even has an interactive website where kids can play games and hear stories.  Snagaboo – what a great way to say BOO!

My Plate Mate

Another great product we were introduced to at the ABC Kids Expo is the Plate Mate plate guard.  It easily snaps on to childrens’ plates and acts as sort of a “back stop” for their fork – helping toddlers to be independent while keeping the mess to a  minimum.  Invented by two moms here in California and made in the USA, this is a genuine great idea!
