A Halloween Wish…

Mom’s Best Award

Yesterday I sent 4 Pilloroos to be evaluated by the Mom’s Best Award Committee.  It was difficult to choose which ones to send.  I finally decided on the Cupcake, Fairy and the Race car Pillows ( I sent the Fairies twice).  I am anxious to hear what kind of reviews my little Pilloroos get.  I hope the Mom evaluators love them.  The award is presented at the end of November, just in time for the Christmas season.  It could be so great for our new company.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed…and really wishing one of the evaluators was my own Mom!

We love being Fancy!

This summer we were introduced to the awesome Fancy Nancy books written by Jane O’Connor.  Always a teacher at heart; it thrills me to see a series of books that are fun to read and great for little girls!  The main character, Nancy, is an intelligent free spirit who loves to dress up in fancy clothes and use her very fancy vocabulary.  Our favorite book out of this series is “Fancy Nancy and the Posh Puppy“.  Nancy struggles being the “fanciest” person in her family as she searches for the perfect dog.

When Lauren and Tatum were invited to a dress up birthday party, I was thrilled to find Fancy Nancy dress up clothes.  So were they!  Dressed in their tutus, sunglasses, plastic high heels and boas, they were definitely the “fanciest” at the party!

Oh how I would love to create a Fancy Nancy Pilloroo!

Pilloroo Packaging is Here!

Our packaging is finalized! I am so happy with our cute little box. I hope our customers love it too. to tell you the truth though, this has been such a dificult part of our product development. Now that it is finished, I feel like throwing a party. What I’ll do instead is have a celebratory shout out for American Business! As a new company watching every penny I will have to fess up to the fact that I started out our search for a manufacturer overseas. I won’t go into the gory details, but after many months, I found myself back to calling companies here in the U.S. So, I was more than pleased when I found a company in Los Angeles who could give us a great price. What I have been overly impressed with though, is how professional they have been throughout the process. E-mails are always returned in a timely manner, mock-ups have been overnighted and the communication has been top notch. American Business is the best in the world!

Central Valley Venture Forum

Last week, Billie Jo and I had the opportunity to take part in the 3rd annual Central California Venture Forum. This event is designed to support small businesses here in California’s Central Valley. It was an honor for Pilloroo to be a part of such a great collection of entrepreneurs who are all taking on the risk of starting and growing a business. The highlight of the two day event was a mock stock exchange where business leaders and Valley residents were invited to become “investors”. Each guest was given 1 million dollars (fake money of course) at the door and was able to “invest” in any of the over 25 businesses represented. I am proud to say Pilloroo did come out in the top tier. We didn’t win, but in all respects did very well. The best part was showing our product and having some Moms and Grandmas giving us their whole stack of bills! We had so many people tell us they loved our product. One of the local TV channels even asked us to be on their morning program. It was a fabulous event, and we are now working harder than ever to reach out to prospective retailers. Oh, and with an upcoming TV appearance, I am now hitting the gym daily in a last ditch effort to lose the 10lbs. I earned from my twin pregnancy! (I know it was probably not so much the pregnancy, but the In and Out Burgers that I always felt were so necessary.<:)

We love Snugaboos!

With Halloween just around the corner, dressing up is more fun than ever.  These hooded blankets are perfect for little ones who love to feel like Super Heroes.  With five different characters, Snagaboos encourage kids to be good!  Snugaboos come with tatoo “Freckles” for kids to apply when they have been thoughtful or helpful.  Snugaboo even has an interactive website where kids can play games and hear stories.  Snagaboo – what a great way to say BOO!

BHAGS – Big Hairy Audacious Goals

A great concept I thought I’d share…

Starting this business has inspired me to read everything I can get my hands on to help me make Pilloroo a successful company.  Built to Last by James C. Collins and Jerry I. Porras is a book that was recommended to me and is filled with a lot of great ideas.   By researching highly successful companies, the authors have pinpointed many successful characteristics these businesses have shared.  One is the BHAG.  A true BHAG is a goal that is so easy to understand that it needs no explanation, should fall well outside the companies’ comfort zone, and it should be so bold and exciting that it stimulates the company’s progress.

Here are some impressive BHAGS from history:

“…before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth.”

John F. Kennedy

“to build a motor car… so low in price that no man making a good salary will be unable to afford one.”

Henry Ford

“to make a pocketable radio”

Talk about audacious goals!  Thankfully these companies succeeded – I can’t run at the Gym without my Ipod!  And I can’t drive myself to the gym without my car.  (I know I should run to the gym, but who has the time?<:)

This book has inspired us to put together some great BHAGS.  They have added to the excitment of running our business.  What a great book!
